If you’ve ever thought about combining your love of travel with the magic of sparkling wine, then this simple guide is for your consideration!

If you're a Prosecco lover...

Take a self-guided Prosecco tour in Italy (Prosecco Road)

The Conegliano Valdobbiadene region has more than just vineyards. This natural treasure is linked to an amazing combination of artistic and architectural delights. As with all Italians, the inhabitants love their deep cultural roots and you will feel them too once you step into the towns and villages that dot this path. A Prosecco glass will never be served alone, so get ready to taste the gastronomic specialities of the region. Venetian cuisine is known for rice, beans, polenta, and plenty of fresh fish due to Lake Garda and the Adriatic Sea in close proximity. Make sure you give the Vialone Nana rice a try, which is found in pretty much every corner of the area.

We had the great fortune to taste exceptional Prosecco over the years, but two worth mentioning here are Villa Sandi and Nino Franco.

If you're seeking Champagne alternatives...

Visit the UK - the land of sparkling wine

The United Kingdom is home to an impressive number of sparkling wine producers. There are plenty of beautiful vineyards spread across the country who produce award-winning fizz. If you’re a Champagne lover, you should know that the UK generally produces their sparkling wines using the traditional Champagne grapes (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay), as well as utilising the traditional Champagne method of sparkling wine production. There’s a lot to get excited about with UK fizz, but listed below are some of our favourite wineries, and how to enjoy them.

1. Sharpham Wine And Cheese, Devon

This award-winning vineyard has it all. Why not enjoy their irresistible fizz along a selection of their own cheeses? If you’re looking to spend a divine afternoon soaking in the dreamy scenery overlooking the River Dart, you should add this to your English wine itinerary. For Sharpham wine delivered to your door, we recommend their Sparkling Pink.

2. Tinwood Estate, West Sussex

The Tinwood Estate’s vineyards are located in the heart of West Sussex, at the foot of the South Downs National Park. These remarkable vineyards started to plant vines in 2007, and have managed to established a reputation for producing memorable English fizz. Their sparkler list includes the Estate Brut, the Blanc de Blancs, and the very tasty Sparkling Rose. They offer daily vineyard tours, but make sure that their calendar has a free spot as the winery can get overwhelmed with tour requests.

3. Chapel Down, Kent

Chapel Down is one of the more famous UK sparkling wine brands. The vineyards are set amongst 22 acres of land, and the winery produces fizz that’s enjoyed country-wide. The estate isn’t just focused on wine, rather they also produce spirits, beers and ciders as well. Enjoy a guided tour where experts will share their knowledge in terms of food & wine pairings and locally sourced seasonal ingredients.

If you enjoy Espumante...

Learn about espumante in Bairrada, Portugal

Although Vinho Verde, Douro Valley and Tavora Varosa  produce amazing Portuguese fizz (or “espumante”), Bairrada is by far the oldest espumante-making region. Espumante is produced throughout the entire country, however much like Spanish Cava, Italian Prosecco, or French Champagne, Brairrada espumante enjoys a protected status designation as well. “DOC Bairrada” must be produced in the traditional (Champagne) method, and stamped with the regional certification. If you’re in the area and want to experience quality bubbles, you might want to pay a visit to the close municipalities like Anadia, Mealhada or Oliveira do Bairro.

One of the absolute gems of the area is Prior Lucas wines. We’ve had the opportunity to both taste and sell the sparklers made by wine maker Rui Lucas. This fantastic winery is located in Bairrada, and produces a small range of interesting sparklers. Our personal favourite, and one that we recommend to everyone, is the Prior Lucas sparkling rose. Made with the baga grape, it has a deliciously fruity nose, with equal measure on the tongue!
