Show Yourself Some Love With These Amazing Chocolate and Fizz Pairings! 

Everyone knows that a cheeseboard was made to pair with still wines, and is often found as a staple menu item of many successful restaurants. What is lesser known however, is how fabulous sparkling wine and chocolate pair together. The deliciousness of the bubbles paired with the sweetness of chocolate… It is easy to lose yourself in the flavours! The right pairing can craft an unforgettable experience for your taste buds.

Why not see for yourself, and try out our guide to some of our favourite fizz and chocolate pairings? We suggest presenting the chocolate on a wooden cutting board (like a cheese board) to give the experience that little something extra.

1. Milk chocolate with a sweet sparkling wine

Milk chocolate usually contains a minimum of 20% cocoa solids, although this may vary. The sweet taste comes from a higher percentage of sugar and milk, compared to darker types. A sweet sparkling wine will beautifully complement the sweetness and the richness of milk chocolate. We suggest you try Torelli Moscato d’Asti, which has brilliant aromas of honeysuckle, elderflower and delicious flavours of grape, melon, and nectarine . It pairs perfectly together with a few squares of your favourite milk chocolate bar, followed by a sip of Torelli Moscato D’Asti. The ideal dessert! 

2. Milk chocolate and salted caramel truffles paired with a rosé brut sparkling wine

Milk chocolate truffles are commonly paired with champagne, and undeniably a good combination. Why not take it up a notch for your taste buds, and try milk chocolate and salted caramel truffles instead? These truffles go incredibly well with the summer berry flavours of a rosé brut sparkling wine. Because these truffles have salted caramel in them, the hint of saltiness will match perfectly with a refreshing and fruity fizz like the Don Guerino Sparkling Rose Malbec, without being overpowered by too much sweetness. We have a sip of the Don Guerino, then let the truffle melt in our mouth, followed by another sip. Magic!

3. White chocolate and raspberries paired with a prosecco

Prosecco screams for white chocolate and freshly picked raspberries, simply because it’s truly a match made in heaven (although technically it is a trio)! Which chocolate matches well with Prosecco due to its ability to clear the palate, enabling the drinker to really taste all of the characteristics of the wine. Also, because white chocolate is made with no cocoa solids, it has a sweeter and creamier taste than darker chocolate types, enhancing the overall experience. Fresh raspberries add a tiny bit of welcomed sourness to the mix, which beautifully balances out the sweetness of the chocolate. Let a square of white chocolate melt in your mouth, eat a raspberry, follow up with a sip of the prosecco and we think you’ll be blown away. We recommend Giol DOC Prosecco Spumante Extra Dry Fenice, which has fine bubbles, apple and lemon fruit flavours that will be perfect for this dynamic trio!

4. Dark chocolate with a dry sparkling wine

A lot of people find dark chocolate a bit bitter, because of its higher cocoa content percentage. This is a strength, when combined with a dry sparkling wine. The powerful cocoa content pairs marvellously well with a dry fizz, as the dryness counteracts the richness of the chocolate. What you get is a strong and unique flavour, not for the fainthearted! This pairing is ideal for people who typically prefer savoury flavours, as opposed to sweet ones. When we experimented with this, we did so with the Champagne Fleury Bolero Extra Brut, which is an excellent pairing to any decent dark chocolate. Enjoy!

5. Pink or ‘ruby’ chocolate with a cava

Pink or ‘ruby’ chocolate is made from the ruby cocoa bean and produces a distinctly pink coloured chocolate. Fans describe the flavour as “sweet, yet sour”, which makes it ideal to pair with a cava. The notoriety of this recently introduced new type of chocolate in 2017 makes it ideal for any dinner party where you want to add the wow-factor and awaken your guests’ curiosity. Pair it with Spanish fizz to complement the slightly sour taste of the chocolate. We recommend Albet i Noya Petit Albet Brut 2016 . Sip the Petit Albet,  savour the ruby chocolate, and finish with another sip. Yum!
